UPA STATEMENT ON UNIVERSITY OF OREGON DECISION TO SUSPEND MEN'S ULTIMATE CLUB'S 2009 SEASON
After reviewing information regarding the Oregon Men’s Ultimate Club’s suspension by their university, including communications with the team and the University of Oregon’s Club Sports Department, the UPA supports the decision of the University of Oregon administration. As a result of the club’s suspension by the school’s administration, the Oregon Open A and B teams will not be permitted by the UPA to compete in the 2009 Northwest College Regional Championships.
This decision is consistent with previous decisions where a club was suspended by its school administration. It is also consistent with the UPA’s stance that the relationship between a school’s administration and its club teams, as well as between a school’s administration and the UPA, are critical to the development of the sport of Ultimate. While the UPA also places a high value on its relationship with college club teams, it recognizes that these teams consist not only of the players on the team, but also the school’s administrative support structure. It is critical for the safety of the players, as well as the reputations of universities, the UPA, and the sport of Ultimate, that players respect and adhere to both university and UPA administrative rules and policies.
The school’s decision was handed down in response to a number of university rules violations by the club over the past two years. The actions of the club may also be found to be in violation of the UPA’s own Conduct Policy. The UPA will be following up with its own investigation into the team’s behavior during and following Oregon Sectionals.
