 ATHLETE APPLICATION PROCEDURES

As was the case in 2001 and 2005, the UPA will be choosing a "select" team to represent the UPA and the United States at the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei.

Based on the Player Mission Statement approved by the UPA Board of Directors in 2001, World Games players "should represent the best of US Ultimate in play and in sportsmanship. Players will be chosen based on high skill as prerequisite, with service to the sport, championship experience, ambassadorial qualities, and ability to fit into the team all valued highly in the selection process." A training squad of 20 (men and women) will be named, with 13 players to be selected by the UPA to represent the USA at the World Games.

Who Can Apply for the Team

Any Ultimate athlete who:

  1. believes that he/she can fulfill the ideals set forth in the World Games US Player's Mission statement noted above
  2. completes the Application by the January 15, 2009 deadline
  3. agrees to the guidelines established by the UPA, WFDF and IWGA (including IWGA and WFDF anti-doping rules and UPA Conduct Policy)
  4. is a member of the UPA throughout his/her tenure as a member of Team USA 2009
is eligible for consideration.

Obligations/Expectations of those selected to the Team

Selected athletes must be willing to comply with all rules and guidelines established by the IWGA, WFDF and the UPA, including WADA Guidelines related to Anti-Doping (need to add link) . Players should recognize that selection to and participation on the 2009 World Games squad is a significant commitment of time (including ongoing workouts in their home community and communications with teammates and coaches) and financial resources and must be willing to accept this responsibility.

Although room, board and local travel at the World Games will be covered by the IWGA and local organizing group, players must be able to pay for their own travel to and from the World Games, as well as expenses related to a number of training weekends and tournaments in preparation for the World Games. This scheduled will be determined by the coach in cooperation with the UPA World Games Selection Committee.

The UPA will provide up to $1000 for travel and hotel reimbursement (receipts required) for each athlete selected to the squad of 20 for training and competition occurring prior to the World Games. An additional $500 for travel reimbursement will be provided to the 13 players selected by the UPA to represent the USA at the World Games.

As part of the ambassadorial expectations for Team USA (and in return for which the UPA is providing the above noted $1000 per player for pre-World Games reimbursement), the UPA is asking that members of Team USA commit several hours at each UPA trainining/competition for Ultimate community outreach. Such activities could include youth clinics, showcase games, dinners, etc which will help to increase the bond between Team USA athletes, the UPA and members of the Ultimate community.

A coach and team trainer/manager will be provided by the UPA in support of Team USA and will travel with the team to all events.

The UPA will secure and provide appropriate uniforms to all members of Team USA athletes and staff.

It is the goal of the UPA Board of Directors, staff and World Games selection committee to support the team to the greatest extent possible. Additional resources may be made available based on the response of the general Ultimate community to fundraising and outreach efforts by Team USA and the UPA.

ONLY THOSE PLAYERS WHO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION AND ATTEND A TRYOUT CAMP WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR SELECTION TO THE TEAM.

Tryout Camp Information

Tryout Camps will occur the last two weekends in February at both an East and a West coast locations.

A maximum of 80 players will be invited to attend one of the two training camps (40 athletes per camp. Athletes will be invited and may attend only one camp). Invitees will be determined by the World Games Selection Committee which will include the coach of Team USA once selected.

Tryout camp participants will be responsible for covering their tryout camp fee (approximately $125) as well as their own travel, accomodation and meal expenses. The UPA will make arrangements with a nearby hotel for those who wish to make reservations.

A squad of 20 will be recommended by the coach (based on player applications and performance at the tryout camps) for approval by the UPA World Games selection committee. A total of 13 players will attend the World Games. The process and timing for selection of the 13 players will be determined by the coach in cooperation with the selection committee after the coach has been named.
