the extreme north end (north of tennis courts) of Van Saun County Park

Directions: Where:
Ultimate frisbee games are played on the large field ~200 yards north of the tennis courts and the park zoo. This is (literally) the extreme northern end of Van Saun Park (Paramus, NJ). In compliance with park regulations, we're not allowed permanent markers, so we set up temporary cones. The field is bordered by Continental Ave (N), a park entrance road (E), and a swerving bike path (W & S).
Directions : Google or Map Quest : The nearest large intersection (traffic light) is Forest Ave. and Spring Valley Rd. in Paramus, NJ. Best parking is either on Dartmouth Ct. (residential) or at Ted's North Deli (closes at 5 p.m.) at the corner of Spring Valley and Continental Ave. Either parking area leaves you with a short walk into the park to the open field where we play Ultimate.
When:
April - October. Since the late 1980's, our games have started ASAP after the clocks spring forward in mid-April, but we don't usually reach critical mass (7 on 7 players, with ample subs) until mid-May. By June and into July and August we're going strong - with ~50% college age players. If you're a new player, don't be frightened, we started as part of an instructional league and maintain that tradition. Games continue after Labor Day, until the clocks fall back in early October. Frankly, post Labor Day games are excellent for new players as the pace is slower, and due to the shortage of players, everyone is more accommodating.
When (part 2) :
Monday and Thursday evenings, beginning at about 6:15 p.m. until dusk. This is pick-up, thus team rosters aren't set in stone. They're dependent on what color shirt you're wearing (see "What to Bring" below). It's not unheard of for players to leave early or arrive late and join in, so don't hesitate to show up at 7:15 or even 8 p.m. And if you have to leave early, that's OK too.
What to expect :
Due to the nature of pick up, the level of Ultimate varies from year to year - and sometimes from week to week. Generally folks who play have a throw from each side - or are working on them. Yes, there is some diving and crowded jumping, but avoiding injury is on everyone's mind. The game is coed, with usually six of the seven players being guys. Knowing how to throw curving passes and the ability to lead receivers is rewarding, but not essential. Attempts at zone defense are not unheard of, but 99% of the time we play man-on-man defense. It's simpler, and sometimes players don't know the names of their teammates, just that they have the same color shirt (see "What to Bring" below).
If you feel you're very much a beginning player, bring a friend of equal skill, but be sure to wear different color shirts. That way, we can place you on opposite teams and you can cover each other. We sometimes set up two games if there are too many players. Due to space restrictions, one usually ends up being a "junior"game, played on a shortened field.
What to bring :
• Three key things to bring :
1) Bring plenty of WATER. There are no drinking fountains (or bathrooms) in the immediate area of the park where we play. Lots of players bring tap water in an old milk jug.
2 & 3) Bring a DARK and a LIGHT shirt. This is pick-up, thus team rosters are decided by what color shirt you're wearing. If you bring one of each type shirt, your chances of more on-field time are improved as you can change shirts to join the less crowded team.
IMPORTANT: Don't wear Gray or B&W referee stripes ! Gray starts out light and turns dark when you sweat, confusing other players. With zebra stripes, no one's sure which team you're on. Try to wear a really, really dark shirt . . . or a really, really light shirt. Keep extras in your trunk.
• Helpful to have :
Cleats, frisbee, cones, and spirit of the game attitude
