Coed and Women's Ultimate

Recruitment and Retention of Women in Coed Leagues and Clubs
Andrea Rossillon, BUDA (Birmingham)
Summary:  The success and sustainability of a typical coed seasonal league depends on the participation of women.  Whether the format is 4/3 or 5/2, the number of teams and thus the competitive opportunities for men are limited by the number of women.  A league that wishes to thrive and grow will need to nurture its women players apart from men's or coed play.  Women players who have learned to rely on themselves and their female teammates are more confident and skilled when they return to coed play: they are better able to meet the competitive demands of their male teammates and themselves.  Thus, the quality of the team, the games and the league improves, to the greater enjoyment of all who play.  This summer, three southern cities embarked on a series of organized intercity clinics and games in order to retain new women in the city leagues and to interest them in tournament play.  Early response data show that these goals were met and an infrastructure now exists for the teaching of future women players.
