TEAM HISTORY/SEASON RECAP
The UC Berkeley men's team has been called "Ugmo" for three
years. Several things have been constant throughout--the leadership of captain
Dan Hodges and coach John Shelton, the strength and intensity of the team's
defense, and its penchant for spectacular plays on both sides of the disc.
Following a 4th place finish at Regionals in 2002, Ugmo was one of the best teams in the country for the
first three months of its 2003 season, but a mystifying fade in April and May left them hungry for the next season.
The addition of longtime Stanford star Bart Watson, using his fifth year of eligibility as a grad student,
added some valuable experience and talent to an already-stacked team. Starting with a win at Santa Barbara
and hungry from losing close games at San Diego and the Stanford Invite, Cal capped off its preseason with
a win at Centex, one of the strongest tournaments in the country. Returning home after a forgettable performance
at Collegiates, Ugmo rolled on through Sectionals and Regionals, earning themselves the top seed at Nationals.
The roster includes a UPA high school champion (Hodges), a UPA college champion (Watson), and a UPA club champion
(Gabe Saunkeah, with Furious). But the team isn't overly reliant on these three--the supporting cast is experienced
and deep. With half the team playing in their last college tournament, the stage is set for a fantastic finish to a fantastic
season. Ugmo--you know.
