Day 2

Round 1: Women's

The big game this round was Penn State vs. Georgia, with Penn State winning it 17-16. The two teams had traded points early in the game, with Georgia taking half. Penn State tied it at 14s, then the two teams traded points to 16s. Sarah Lahm (11) had an amazing catch against two Georgia defenders for game point.

The Texas women have been playing incredibly well this weekend and took the game against Wisconsin 15-11. They were up by five for most of the game. Wisconsin rallied in the second half, with Allison Noble getting a Callahan goal at 14-10, but Texas took it on the next point. They'll face Stanford next in what should prove to be their toughest game so far.

Brown led Iowa the entire game and came away with a 15-9 victory.

UCSD defeated Duke 15-8 in the quickest game of the round. Duke managed to go up early in the game, but UCSD took half with a catch by Cherie Lim (9) and pulled away from there. UCSD now moves on to face MIT.

Round 2: Women's

The quarterfinal women's match ups were phenomenal, especially the Brown/Berkeley game and the MIT/UCSD game. In a major upset of the number one seed, Brown took the game against Berkeley 13-11. Brown started the game by going up 2-0, but Berkeley came back strong and took half 8-5. It looked like Berkeley was going to pull away, but Brown made a comeback, bringing it to 8-9. They tied it at 10's before Brown's Maureen McCamley (27) threw to Rebecca Simon (13) to take the lead, 11-10 Brown, At this point, scorekeepers were notified that the cap would go on in ten minutes. Ten minutes later, the score was still 11-10.

The wind was a factor throughout this game, causing a huge number of turnovers. This field in particular seemed to be affected. Brown turned the disc over at the goal line, and Berkeley's Heidi-Marie Clemens (23) made a catch from Lindsay Lowe (99) to tie it at 11's. On the next point, Berkeley's Rowan Sill (88) got a big D block, giving them a chance to take the game, but they couldn't convert. Twice Brown's Maureen McCamley hucked the disc to the end zone, but the wind carried it out of the receiver's reach. Berkeley turned the disc over in the end zone, and #6 made an awesome catch for Brown to bring it to 12-11. After a beautiful pull by Brown, Berkeley turned it over, and Brown was able to take the game with a couple passes between McCamley and Simon and a catch by Shirley Wu (19). It should be noted that sophomore Cate Brown (54) was also a big player in this game for Brown. She laid out for just about everything that came her way.

In the MIT/UCSD game, it looked like MIT was going to pull away in the second half, but UCSD wasn't giving up easily. They brought it back to 13-12. This game also had quite a few turnovers near the end zone, but finally MIT's Chrissy Dobson (20), Angela Tong (23), and Taylor Schildgen (27) made a series of quick, beautiful connections to bring it to 14-12 MIT. After several more turnovers, Kathy Dobson (6) threw to April Rasala (4) for the game MIT 15-12.

Colorado had a strong showing against Penn State. Game point for Colorado took a while as both teams turned the disc over quite a few times. Penn State's Nicole Cook (15) was able to make a nice layout catch to bring the game to 14-6, Colorado before Catherine Anievas (21) caught the winning goal for Colorado. They are fired up and ready for the semis, though they'll face tough competition against Stanford. Stanford had a relatively easy game against Texas, winning it 15-3. Texas had some awesome D blocks though and managed to hold off Stanford's victory briefly, taking the game from 14-1 to 14-3 in a couple hard fought points before Stanford's final goal.
