How they got here:
2nd place in Northwest Region
Stanford Superfly has long history of winning, and this year is no different. Their only loss all season was a tight game against Berkeley at the Northwest Regional finals. Superfly is an all around solid team with very few weaknesses. They have a disciplined, organized offense run through 2-3 main handlers who huck and give-go with equal ease.
Gwen Ambler #5 is a great handler and one of their top all around players. Her throws are solid, and she is very tough to mark. Jenny Burney #23 and Lauren Casey #29 are very good handlers and are also players to watch out for. Enessa Janes #7 and Karen Milch #9 are fast, aggressive receivers and the handlers' favorite targets.
Superfly, as a whole, is a very fast team with tough, "in-your-pants" person defense, and a good four person cup that they can set in transition. Lyndsay Holley #6 is someone to look out for pushing in the cup, and Hannah Griego #10 and Enessa Janes are extremely quick, intense defenders. A dangerous team that capitalizes on opponents mistakes and goes all out all the time, Superfly is one of the best women's teams at Nationals this year.
Stanford is a solid group of great athletes and ultimate players. There are no gimmicks or tricks to their O, they are just plain good. They're core handlers of Gwen Ambler (definitely on the short list for Callahan), Jenn Burney, Lauren Casey and Whitney Metzger will patiently run their dump-swing offense all day. Gwen in particular can throw any breakmark, as well as put it long. With speedy receivers like Erin Lapping, Enessa James and Hannah Griego, they are certainly a double threat both underneath and going deep.
As picture perfect as their O can be, their D is certainly no slouch either. They have a mean 4 person cup, but they rely mostly on hard pressure man defense to really rattle their opponents. This team is fast - amazingly fast. Plus they play smart. They have several former NCAA varsity track athletes to round out their core, and plenty of other speedsters to match.
