UPA 2003 COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

University of Pennsylvania

"Void"
Philadelphia, PA

How they got here: 1st in Metro East Region

Scouting Report

Void has enjoyed immense success over their years of dominance over the Metro East (and formerly Mid-Atlantic) Region. After a disappointing finish last season, falling to rival Swarthmore in the regional quarterfinals, the Void Army has come back stronger, deeper, and with as much motivation as anybody to prove they can run with the big boys. The team lost only a few players to graduation, have maintained their strong core of A-line players, and managed to make some huge off-season acquisitions, picking up seasoned club veterans with college eligibility to spare.

The Void offense is a thing of beauty. They stay chilly with the disc at all times, and don't give their opponents too many turnovers to work with. Void's handlers, led by Logan "I'm definitely not 5'8" Miller (#46) and Alan "Nut-Nut" Rotenberg (#81), keep the disc moving at all times with a quick dump-swing offense, and look for long in-cuts for 25-30 yard gainers. Their downfield cutters are quick, athletic, and extremely effective at mixing up the in-cuts with deep looks. Look for Dan "my nickname is inappropriate" Cavanaugh (#3), Dugan (#25), and Kent (#8) to flow with the in-cuts. Then, of course, there's Jared. Lurching around at a giant 6'3", Jared "I'm ridiculously good at ultimate" Inselmann (#11) has been a rising force in the Metro East for years, and has brought his game to a whole new level this year, rugby helmet and all. Inselmann was crucial in Void's comeback in this years' Regional Semi-final -- he entered the game, skull fracture and all, with UPenn down 6-3 to Swat. Jared's deep D and inspirational presence sparked a Void comeback that ended in a 15-11 victory.

Penn's defense is no less imposing. Many of the familiar offensive faces will be staring you down on D as well. Dan and Jared have always been fantastic defenders, and the additions of Utsav "the Ringer" Schurmans '87 and Matt "Ivy-League Wayfarer!" Schmucker '72 allow the Void to match up defensive stars on almost every team's main threats. These guys will wear you down on defense, force the turn, and flow the disc all the way up the field on you.

A warning to the Void's opponents in Texas -- don't underestimate this team; they have the height, the throws, the leadership, and especially the wiliness to bring themselves the glory at Natties.
