Following a dramatic run to the semifinals of last year's Nationals, William and Mary arrived in the Fall with a lot of work ahead. Having lost nine seniors to graduation and three underclassmen to other commitments, little was expected of this team. However, with the addition of two savvy veterans, Kenny Goodenow and Arnie Larson, and a crop of athletic freshman, the team improved steadily throughout the Fall.
William and Mary earned its first ever major tournament championship at the Queen City Tune-Up in Charlotte, NC February 1-2. The team beat North Carolina State University in the finals 15-13.
Peaking at just the right time, William and Mary played its best during the first two rounds of the College Series. A 7-0 record and a finals defeat of arch-rival University of Virginia at the Blue Ridge Sectionals landed the team the top seed at Regionals.
At the Atlantic Coast Regionals in Statesboro, GA, the team cruised through the first three rounds of play and then faltered in the finals, losing the NC State 15-12. William and Mary earned the region's second seed for Nationals by defeating the University of Florida 15-6. Darkhorse returns in 2003.
