Spank's road to Nationals began last fall at club sectionals, when Penn State earned the top spot in the Founder's Section for a college team. Spank's next fall tournament was the CFCC finals at Maryland University, where they went 4-0 before losing in the finals to UPenn. A win here over George Washington University, a nationals qualifier the year before, earned Spank a lot of confidence. Spank's first action in the spring was in North Carolina over their spring break, when the team trained at Wuff Camp under Mike Gerics. The week culminated at Terminus, where the sting of a disappointing 0-3 Saturday was only slightly soothed by a 3-0 Sunday (in a lower bracket). Next up was Penn State's own tournament, Spring Phling, where losses to Cornell and Ohio State revealed that the team had a long way to go to qualify for nationals. In the coming weeks the college championship series kicked off at the West Penn sectionals, where Spank won despite a scare from a confident Edinboro team. This earned Spank a #3 seed coming into the Metro East regionals. After wins against Salisbury and Delaware, Spank defeated Cornell for the first time, earning a spot in the finals against UPenn. Losing in the finals forced a game against George Washington University. Spank took an early lead, but the game came down to a Callahan goal by Ian McClellan in a point for the universe, earning Spank a trip to Austin.
